Best Age for Newborn Pictures: When Should You Schedule Your Baby's Newborn Session?

June 18th, 2026 by Megan

One of the most common questions I get from new parents is:

"What is the best age for newborn pictures?"

The short answer is that I typically recommend photographing newborns between 7-14 days old. However, there is much more to the story than that.

After photographing babies for over 13 years, I've learned that every baby is different. While there are definitely reasons why 7-14 days is considered the ideal newborn photography window, there is no magic age that guarantees a sleepy baby or a perfect session.

In fact, some of my favorite newborn sessions have happened well outside the "recommended" age range.

If you're expecting a baby or wondering if you've already missed the newborn stage, here's everything you need to know.

Why Is 7-14 Days Considered the Best Age for Newborn Pictures?

The first two weeks of life tend to give us the best chance of capturing those classic sleepy newborn portraits.

At this age, babies are still adjusting to life outside the womb. They are often very sleepy, enjoy being swaddled, and naturally curl up into those adorable newborn poses that parents love.

There are several reasons I recommend this timeframe:

  • Babies are still naturally curled up from being in the womb.
  • They tend to sleep more deeply.
  • They generally enjoy being wrapped and swaddled.
  • They are often easier to pose comfortably.
  • Moms have had a little time to recover after delivery.
  • Breastfeeding moms have usually had time for their milk supply to become established.

The 7-14 day window doesn't guarantee a sleepy baby, but it gives us some of the best odds for achieving those traditional newborn images.

What 13 Years of Newborn Session Experience Has Taught Me

One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that younger automatically means easier.

The reality is that every baby has their own personality.

I recently photographed a beautiful baby girl who was only 4 days old. Despite feeding, soothing, and every trick in the book, she stayed awake for nearly two hours. Her mom was hoping for sleepy newborn images, and eventually we were able to get them after she eventually drifted off to sleep.

That same week, I photographed a 3-week-old boy who slept soundly through the entire session. We captured gorgeous images from beginning to end.

The goal is simple: beautiful images of your baby. But age alone isn't the rule — and honestly? Some of my best galleries have come from babies with wide eyes and alert expressions full of personality.

What About 3-Week-Old Newborn Photos?

At the three-week mark, many babies become more alert and may be more sensitive to handling. Spending longer in certain positions, stretching instead of curling, and resisting poses they didn't mind a week ago — all of this is common.

For example:

  • Posing on hands with a tucked-up belly can be more challenging.
  • Curled and naked poses in small props may not be possible.

That doesn't mean it can't be done — it may just look a little different.

Advantages and Benefits of Slightly Older Newborn Sessions

There are some genuinely special benefits to photographing babies beyond the two-week window:

  • Incredible Eye Contact — Babies become more visually aware and can look directly into the camera, showing a connection that is absolutely stunning.
  • Smiles — Early social smiles can appear and make your gallery extra special.
  • Greater Interaction — Babies are more engaged with the world around them, creating unique and developing expressions.

Is 1 Month Too Old for Newborn Photos?

At one month old:

  • Full body curled poses may be more difficult.
  • Detail-focused shots — toes, eyelashes, tiny features — are still incredibly sweet.
  • Family and lifestyle images remain beautiful and worth capturing.

Surprised parents often accompany babies to sessions at this age — and the results can be just as meaningful.

Can a 2-Month-Old Have a Successful Newborn-Style Session?

Yes! Many myths surround the idea that a successful newborn-style session is impossible after a certain age.

During COVID shutdowns, I photographed babies well past the typical studio window. As a result, those sessions were every bit as beautiful and the approach worked just as well.

It is never too late to document your baby at any age. Premature babies, in particular, bring unique flexibility to this — NICU situations and early arrivals often mean we continue to adapt our approach and environment.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Last?

My packages typically last in length based on the selected number of setups and breaks.

  • Diaper changes are always included.
  • I always allow plenty of feeding time.
  • Sessions are designed to be stress-free.
  • Bonnets, wraps, and pacifiers are kept available to help soothe between setups.
  • Separate client and baby areas allow your child to stay warm enough and comfortable.
  • Children's snacks are available.
  • The studio is kept warm enough to keep baby comfortable and encourage relaxation.
  • Props are cleaned and sanitized regularly — baby immune systems are always a top priority.

If your baby arrives early in the third trimester or before your due date — avoid panic. We can always adapt.

I am flexible and know how to work with the situation. Having a baby is one of life's greatest experiences — don't let it pass without documenting it at any age. I've had countless families return for birthday and cake smash sessions, and many skip newborn sessions only to wish they hadn't.
